8/12/06 - Front intake

You all remember the wonderful 120mm fan that I showed off not so long ago, cunningly held in place with hair ties:

It met an unfortunate end for two reasons: Firstly, it didn't fit in the space anymore after my new fan controller (courtesy of Jencen) arrived; secondly, it had an unfortunate accident that left it missing three of its blades. Ow. However, I replaced it with one of my spare 80mm fans, which helped maintain some of the airflow.

It worked. Somewhat. But not enough to compensate, so I decided to put in another fan. The original plan was to put them in side-by-side, nestled in the space between the front of the metal drive caddy and the overlap at the front of the case, but said gap turned out to be too narrow. The second idea was to put them in 'series'. The problem there is that the space is too wide and the fans don't give the benefit they should as a result.

Luckily, the fan controller itself was packaged with these lovely foam wedges, which are all kinds of fun. Two can be fitted together to form a rectangle of the right width, but they're a little too short to fill the space between the fan controller and the 5.25" drive above, meaning the fan behind would occasionally tug them out of position, with Fun Times for All. Thusly, two were cut as spacers (the curves being cut out to make sure the things don't end up being mangled in the fan themselves).

The offcuts from the above were made into T-shaped thingies that hold the outside pieces in their rectangular alignment via holes through the middle...

And then mounted in place, to form the 'duct'...

And finally, the second fan is settled into its new home with more of those wonderful hair ties (freshly stolen from the housemate).

The second fan did add to the airflow somewhat, but the whole thing became a lot more efficient after adding the makeshift 'duct', at least to the fingers. And hey, it makes me feel slightly happier, which is the main thing.

Another ghetto case mod complete! Now to get a filter for the space between the drive and fan controller.

Update: 9/12/06

More foam was added at the front to keep the intake nicely hemmed in. Two drive covers were also added, sans doors, to provide a makeshift grille.
